J. Gilberts

If you have read any of my posts you’d know that I am a chef and like most chefs we love food. I am definitely a self-proclaimed foodie. However, I have not been able to go out and dine at a nice restaurant in while. But today was my husband’s birthday and we decided to go to J. Gilberts. It was FABULOUS! Everything from start to finish was beyond excellent!

We did not have a wait at all we got there shortly after they opened. The prices were reasonably priced especially when you factor in everything that you get with your meal. The hubs and I decided to select something from the Prix-fixe menu which gave you three courses. The first course was a soup or salad, the second course of various entrees, and the third course of a dessert. In my opinion, if you want to save some money select from the Prix-Fixe menu. You will get more food items for less money than you would by ordering separately. Now don't worry you will still get full-sized food portions.

The hubs first course was Marland crab bisque. This bisque was the smoothest bisque I have ever tasted! It had a slight potato flavor, which was fine because I love potato soup. The crab was fresh and because it is seafood it would have a smell but it did not have a lingering smell. I was happy about that! I actually almost ate as much as he did haha.

His second course was a six-ounce filet with scallops, Yukon potatoes, asparagus and a side of lobster mac and cheese. He really loved his meal. The scallops were tender and had a sweet yet savory taste.

The lobster mac and cheese was very creamy and flavorful a bonus was it was made with my favorite pasta noodle; cavatappi.

His dessert was a seven-layer coconut cake. It was made with a white cake and served with pineapple ice cream and passion fruit coulis (pureed sauce). The coulis was very good but it was slightly overpowering but when paired with the pineapple ice cream it helped to balance out all of the flavors.

My first course was Caesar salad. I LOVE caesar salad so I was extremely pleased with my first course. I did not op for anchovies but the caesar dressing, parmesan crisps, and sourdough croutons were amazing.

My second course was a six-ounce filet with a crab cake, Yukon potatoes, and asparagus. My husband and I both order med-well filets. We really did not have to use our steak knives if we did not want to because the filets were beyond tender. I gave the hubs my crab cake but I did taste a sample. The crab cakes were filled with crabmeat which I appreciate because there is nothing like getting more breadcrumbs than crab in a crab cake. The remoulade sauce wasn't like a traditional remoulade where it has more of a mayo-mustard flavor with some seasonings, The sauce had a slight kick and tang to it the hubs and I enjoyed it. The Yukon potatoes were remarkable they had the right amount of butter and a little bit of garlic. The asparagus had a hint of a smoky flavor and the tomatoes were fresh and mixed with a little herb and I believe there was olive oil or a touch of butter incorporated.

My dessert was a Chocolate Velvet Cake. Now I am not a big chocolate fan but when I saw a picture of this cake it reminded me of a cake that used to be served at my very first job many, many years ago. Lo and behold it tasted exactly like that cake the only difference was the height of the cake. The one we served was twice as high. I literally screamed in that restaurant because for years I have been telling my husband about this chocolate layered cake that I LOVED, and hoped that one day I could find it or find something similar and I did. The cake was incredibly moist and has a layer of chocolate cake first, then chocolate mousse, and chocolate ganache on top. It was paired with raspberry ice cream, whipped cream, and raspberries. I wasn't too impressed with the raspberry ice cream it was just okay the cake could have been served with a double chocolate ice cream or simply french vanilla ice cream. If nothing else the cake could have been served alone because it was definitely the star!

It was a really awesome meal and we will definitely return! If you are ever in the Columbus, Ohio area check them out. They have more locations and I am sure they are just as great! Check out their website https://www.jgilberts.com/ to find a location near you.
