I’m Here

After the post about getting my TEE test and hoping to get the catheter procedure, it turns out that my only option was to get Open Heart Surgery. The biggest device to cover a hole in the heart was 38mm and my hole was measured at 41mm. So the hubs and I decided that I would have Open Heart Surgery and I decided that Monday, February the 5th 2018 would be the date. The time in between my last post up until my surgery was hectic and stressful. There was so much to consider. I had to get things straightened out at my job in regards to menus and scheduling my employees (I’m a Chef). I also had to make sure that my family was prepared for when I came home and…if I didn’t come home.

The morning of my surgery was pretty calm. I had to be there about 5:30am and my procedure was to take place at 7:30am. The nurses, the anesthesiologists, and my Cardiac Surgeon were all beyond excellent. Once I got to the hospital I had to get an IV put in my left hand and in my left arm. Then the medical team explained every step that they were going to take and I was sent off to surgery. After that, I was being pushed down the hallway to the operating room.

The operating room looked different than I thought. It had lots of oval-shaped overhead lights and a table that they had me slide onto. The last thing that I remember is one of the anesthesiologists asking me my name and the procedure that I was getting. The next thing I knew I woke up in a dark room freezing with a nurse. I later found out that I was in the ICU and it was Tuesday night . I had two IV’s in the right side of my neck and two chest tubes in the front of my chest to get rid of any drainage from the surgery. That began the start of this journey. While I was in the hospital I had some ups and many downs but I got through it and I am continuing to get through it. Stay tuned…
